Find the key of your track

Open a song from your device and pick a section where the harmony settles, such as a chorus. We decode and analyze it in your browser. Your audio never leaves this page.

How this analysis works

We mix your channels to mono, reduce the sample rate to about 11 kHz, and take overlapping spectra of 4,096 samples. We fold every frequency between 65 Hz and 2,100 Hz into one of 12 pitch classes, tuned to A = 440 Hz, and sum them across your segment.

We then correlate that profile with the Krumhansl-Kessler major and minor key profiles for all 24 keys and rank the matches. Modal music, key changes, heavy distortion and tuning far from A = 440 Hz can mislead the method. Treat each candidate as an estimate for your segment, then confirm it by ear.

Understand your result

We decode your audio in the browser, fold its spectrum into 12 pitch classes tuned to A = 440 Hz, and correlate that profile with the Krumhansl-Kessler major and minor key profiles for all 24 keys. Relative keys share notes, so the top candidates can include both C major and A minor. Modal music, key changes and unusual tuning can mislead the method; confirm the result by ear.
